3rd grade: 10 wpm / 95 %
4th grade: 13-14 wpm / 95%
5th grade: 16-17 wpm / 95%
6th grade: 20 wpm / 95%
7th grade: 25 wpm / 95%
8th grade: 30 wpm / 95%

High schools expect students to type 30 wpm / 95% by touch when they enter 9th grade.

ULTRAKEY KEYBOARDING PROGRAM

You may request to purchase the UltraKey program through our school at any time!!
The cost is $19.95. Checks should be payable to: Lancaster Mennonite School.
(All tests should be done with a paper taped to the top of the keyboard to cover the hands so the student is typing by touch.)

IF YOUR CHILD IS IN 4TH - 8TH GRADE AND HAS NOT FINISHED ULTRAKEY:
As I’m sure you’re aware, keyboarding is not just a convenient skill, but a required competency in today’s modern world. Keyboarding by touch (without looking down at the keyboard) enables one to type fluently and focus on the content without the interruption of hunting the keys. At Kraybill Campus, students learn to keyboard by touch in third grade with the UltraKey program. Teachers can then assign written work to be typed in school, and I can focus on other skills in computer class. In 6th - 8th grades, students are expected to be able to type essays in the computer lab during language class each week.

Keyboarding by touch is a skill learned through repetition, as with learning to play an instrument. It is learned best through frequent practice, for at least 20 minutes, 3-4 times per week. This is what we do in third grade, and most students finish the UltraKey program and are typing by touch at the end of the third quarter.

Unfortunately, there is not enough time within the school day (after third grade) to provide the frequent practice needed to master keyboarding. Therefore, I strongly recommend that new students purchase the UltraKey program and work through it at home, using proper body/hand/finger posture and positions.

Always check that your child is typing accurately, hitting the keys with the correct fingers, with wrists up. Keyboarding by touch is achieved by:
  • proper body posture (sit up, feet flat, arms like an “L”)
  • wrists up and fingers curved
  • fingers on home-row, with pointer fingers anchored
  • fingers tap the keys quickly
  • Go SLOW when learning. Work for CONTROL of the fingers.
  • Use the correct finger reaches as taught in UltraKey (The “c” key may also be hit with the “f” finger.)
  • Try to not look down at the keyboard. You can tape a sheet of paper to the keyboard to cover hands.
  • When using UltraKey, I accept 10wpm/95% to move onto the next level of letters.
  • I will test each student at school with hands covered, even if they have passed at home.
